Autoimmune and Inflammatory Conditions

Autoimmune conditions are among the most complex and challenging presentations in modern medicine — and among the most underserved from an integrative perspective. Whether you have a confirmed autoimmune diagnosis, are in the process of being evaluated, or are simply living with symptoms that haven't yet been explained, Natura offers a comprehensive, whole-person approach to autoimmune and inflammatory health that goes deeper than most patients have experienced.

Our Approach

The immune system is not a single organ or a simple switch — it is a vast, dynamic network influenced by the gut, the nervous system, the hormonal system, environmental exposures, infectious history, stress physiology, and genetics. When autoimmunity develops, it is rarely the result of one thing going wrong. It is almost always the result of multiple factors converging in a way that tips the immune system out of balance.

At Natura, we investigate those factors systematically and address them individually and collectively. Our approach draws on the full breadth of naturopathic medicine — gut health, stress and HPA axis regulation, environmental medicine, infectious disease, hormonal balance, nutrition, and lifestyle — to build a care plan that addresses the underlying terrain of immune dysregulation, not just its surface manifestations.

We serve a wide range of autoimmune patients. Some come to us as an adjunct to rheumatology care — wanting a broader, more holistic perspective alongside their conventional treatment. Others come specifically because they are not ready to start, or do not want to continue, conventional immunosuppressive medications, and are looking for naturopathic alternatives and support. Others are newly symptomatic and not yet diagnosed, seeking a thorough evaluation that can help clarify what is happening and prepare them for next steps. All of these patients are welcome here, and we meet each of them where they are.

The Pillars of Our Autoimmune Approach

Gut Health & the Immune Connection
The gut is home to the majority of the immune system, and gut dysfunction — including intestinal permeability, microbiome imbalance, and chronic gut inflammation — is consistently found in the context of autoimmune conditions. Addressing gut health is an important part of our autoimmune approach for many patients, though it is one of several factors we consider rather than a singular focus.

Stress & HPA Axis Regulation
Chronic stress and cortisol dysregulation have well-documented effects on immune regulation — shifting immune balance in ways that can trigger or worsen autoimmune activity. We assess and address the HPA axis as a meaningful contributor to immune dysregulation in many of our autoimmune patients.

Infectious Triggers
Certain infections are well-established triggers for autoimmune conditions — including Epstein-Barr virus, streptococcal infections, Lyme disease, and others. We investigate infectious triggers as part of our autoimmune evaluation and address them when identified.

Environmental Triggers
Mold, heavy metals, pesticides, and chemical exposures are increasingly recognized as significant contributors to immune dysregulation and autoimmune activation. We assess environmental burden as part of comprehensive autoimmune care and address identified exposures through targeted environmental medicine.

Nutritional & Metabolic Foundation
Nutritional deficiencies, metabolic dysfunction, and blood sugar dysregulation all influence immune regulation and inflammatory tone. We address these foundational factors as part of every autoimmune care plan.

Hormonal Influences
Autoimmune conditions disproportionately affect women, and hormonal factors — including estrogen, progesterone, thyroid hormones, and cortisol — play significant roles in immune regulation. We assess and address hormonal contributors to autoimmune activity as part of whole-person care.

Conditions We Support

Autoimmune and inflammatory conditions exist across virtually every body system. Below are some of the conditions we most commonly see and support at Natura.

Rheumatological Conditions

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)

  • Lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus / SLE)

  • Ankylosing spondylitis and spondyloarthropathy

  • Psoriatic arthritis

  • Sjögren's syndrome

  • Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD)

  • Polymyalgia rheumatica

  • Raynaud's phenomenon

  • Scleroderma

  • Fibromyalgia

Autoimmune Conditions Across Other Body Systems
Many autoimmune conditions are addressed in depth on other pages of our site — we provide naturopathic support for all of these and cross-reference our care accordingly:

Undifferentiated & Early Autoimmune Presentations
Not every patient who comes to us with autoimmune symptoms has a confirmed diagnosis. Some are early in the diagnostic process — experiencing symptoms that suggest autoimmune activity without yet meeting criteria for a specific diagnosis. We take these presentations seriously, run appropriate evaluations, and help patients understand what their results may mean. For many patients, working with us is an important step in preparing for — and getting the most out of — a future rheumatology referral.

Comprehensive autoimmune evaluation at Natura includes laboratory testing that helps us understand the full picture of immune dysregulation — and in many cases, helps prepare patients for a more productive relationship with rheumatology when that referral is appropriate.

  • Autoimmune panels — including ANA and other condition-specific antibody panels relevant to the patient's clinical presentation

  • Inflammatory markers

  • Gut health assessment — intestinal permeability markers, microbiome testing, and digestive function evaluation

  • Infectious disease testing — viral reactivation panels, Lyme and co-infection testing, and other infectious trigger evaluation

  • Environmental toxin panels — heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticides, and endocrine disruptors as autoimmune triggers

  • Hormonal panels — comprehensive hormonal assessment for autoimmune patients, particularly where hormonal contributors are suspected

  • Nutritional assessment — deficiencies in vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, magnesium, and other key immune-regulating nutrients

  • Metabolic markers — blood sugar, insulin, and metabolic function as they influence immune regulation

  • Genetic & functional genomic testing — where genetic contributors to immune dysregulation are relevant

  • Referrals for specialist testing — when rheumatology evaluation, imaging, or specialist-level diagnostics are indicated

Testing We Use

  • Dietary guidance — individualized anti-inflammatory dietary support, addressing gut health, food sensitivities, and the nutritional foundations of immune regulation

  • Gut health therapies — targeted gut restoration protocols addressing microbiome imbalance, intestinal permeability, and digestive dysfunction as drivers of immune dysregulation

  • Herbal medicine — evidence-informed botanical therapies with immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, and adaptogenic properties relevant to autoimmune conditions

  • Nutritional therapy & supplementation — targeted nutrients to support immune regulation, reduce inflammation, and address identified deficiencies

  • Stress & HPA axis support — adaptogenic and lifestyle-based therapies to regulate the stress response and its influence on immune function

  • Environmental detoxification — addressing identified environmental triggers through targeted detoxification support

  • Pharmaceutical prescriptions — including NSAIDs for inflammatory pain management and low-dose naltrexone (LDN), which has emerging evidence as an immune-modulating therapy in autoimmune conditions. We do not typically prescribe high-level immunosuppressive rheumatology medications — patients requiring these are supported in working with rheumatology for that aspect of their care

  • IV therapy — intravenous nutrient support for immune regulation, inflammation reduction, and overall systemic resilience

  • Lifestyle medicine — sleep, stress management, movement, and environmental modification as foundational immune health practices

  • Referrals & collaborative care — we work alongside rheumatologists and other specialists, referring when conventional management or specialist-level evaluation is clearly in the patient's best interest, and collaborating to ensure naturopathic and conventional care are well-coordinated
