Thyroid Health

The thyroid gland is small, but its influence is enormous. It regulates metabolism, energy production, body temperature, heart rate, mood, cognitive function, weight, hair and skin health, fertility, and much more. When the thyroid is not functioning optimally — even subtly — the effects ripple through virtually every system in the body. At Natura, we take thyroid health seriously, we test it thoroughly, and we treat it with the individualized attention it deserves.

Our Approach

One of the most common frustrations we hear from thyroid patients is this: "My doctor told me my thyroid is normal — but I still feel terrible." This happens because conventional thyroid evaluation often relies on a single test — TSH — and uses reference ranges broad enough to miss significant dysfunction. At Natura, we do it differently.

We run a comprehensive thyroid panel that gives us a full and accurate picture of how your thyroid is actually functioning — not just whether your numbers fall within a wide reference range, but whether your thyroid hormones are in the more specific, optimal ranges where your body actually feels and functions its best. We have found that many patients who have been told their thyroid is "fine" have meaningful thyroid dysfunction that, when properly identified and addressed, makes a profound difference in how they feel.

We also recognize that the thyroid does not function in isolation. It is intimately connected to your hormonal system, your gut, your immune system, your metabolism, your mental health, your cardiovascular health, and more. Our approach addresses those connections — treating the whole person, not just the gland.

Conditions We Support

Hypothyroidism
An underactive thyroid is one of the most common — and most commonly undertreated — endocrine conditions. Symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, brain fog, depression, dry skin, and hair loss are classic signs that the thyroid may not be producing enough hormone. We investigate thoroughly, treat to optimal ranges rather than simply "normal" ones, and monitor closely to ensure you are feeling your best.

Subclinical Hypothyroidism
When TSH is mildly elevated but thyroid hormones appear normal by conventional standards, many patients are told to simply watch and wait. At Natura, we take subclinical hypothyroidism seriously — recognizing that many patients are symptomatic at this stage and that early, thoughtful intervention can prevent progression and meaningfully improve quality of life.

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland — and it is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. At Natura, we go beyond simply replacing thyroid hormone. We address the autoimmune component directly, recognizing the well-established connections between Hashimoto's and gut health, intestinal permeability, dietary triggers (including gluten sensitivity), chronic inflammation, and immune dysregulation. Every patient's Hashimoto's presentation is unique, and we treat it as such — building an individualized plan that addresses both thyroid function and the underlying immune dysfunction driving it.

Hyperthyroidism
An overactive thyroid produces too much hormone, leading to symptoms such as rapid heart rate, anxiety, weight loss, heat intolerance, tremor, and sleep disruption. We support patients with hyperthyroidism through naturopathic therapies aimed at calming the overactive thyroid response, and we coordinate carefully with endocrinology and other specialists when conventional medical or procedural intervention is needed.

Graves' Disease
Graves' disease is an autoimmune condition that causes hyperthyroidism. Similar to our approach with Hashimoto's, we address both the thyroid dysfunction and the underlying autoimmune drivers — supporting immune regulation, gut health, and overall resilience alongside conventional management when appropriate.

Postpartum Thyroiditis
Thyroid dysfunction is common in the postpartum period and frequently goes unrecognized. Postpartum thyroiditis can cause a phase of hyperthyroidism followed by hypothyroidism — and its symptoms are often mistakenly attributed entirely to the normal challenges of new parenthood. We screen for and address postpartum thyroid changes as part of our comprehensive perinatal care.

Thyroid Nodules
We support patients with thyroid nodules through appropriate monitoring, imaging when indicated, and naturopathic support for overall thyroid health. When nodule characteristics warrant specialist evaluation or biopsy, we refer to endocrinology or appropriate specialists promptly.

Thyroid Health Across Body Systems
Because the thyroid influences so many systems simultaneously, thyroid dysfunction frequently manifests as — or contributes to — conditions across the body. We look at thyroid health as part of our evaluation of fatigue, weight concerns, mood and mental health, hair and skin changes, fertility challenges, cardiovascular risk, cognitive difficulties, and hormonal imbalances.

Comprehensive thyroid evaluation at Natura goes well beyond TSH. Our thyroid lab panels typically include:

  • TSH — thyroid stimulating hormone, the standard screening marker, interpreted within tighter optimal ranges than conventional medicine typically uses

  • Free T4 — the primary thyroid hormone produced by the gland, available for use by the body

  • Free T3 — the active form of thyroid hormone that actually enters cells and drives metabolic function; often the most clinically relevant marker for how patients actually feel

  • Reverse T3 — an inactive form of T3 that can block thyroid receptor activity; elevated in chronic stress, illness, and conversion problems

  • Thyroid antibodies — TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies to screen for and monitor autoimmune thyroid conditions including Hashimoto's and Graves' disease

  • Thyroid ultrasound — ordered when clinically indicated to evaluate nodules, gland size, and structural changes

  • Related panels — we routinely assess nutritional factors that directly influence thyroid function, including iodine, selenium, zinc, vitamin D, and ferritin, as well as inflammatory markers and comprehensive metabolic and hormonal panels.

  • Thyroid hormone prescribing — we prescribe thyroid medications when indicated, using the formulation that best fits each patient's needs. This includes synthetic thyroid hormones (levothyroxine, liothyronine) and desiccated thyroid — a bioidentical thyroid hormone preparation in which the hormone molecules are identical to those produced naturally by the human thyroid gland. We work with you to find the right medication, the right dose, and the right targets for your individual physiology

  • Herbal medicine — botanical support for thyroid function, immune modulation in autoimmune thyroid conditions, and adrenal support as it relates to thyroid health

  • Nutritional therapy & supplementation — targeted nutrients essential for thyroid hormone production, conversion, and receptor function, including iodine, selenium, zinc, iron, and vitamin D — addressed based on your individual testing results

  • Dietary guidance — individualized dietary support addressing autoimmune triggers, gut health, inflammation, and nutritional adequacy for optimal thyroid function. For patients with Hashimoto's, we discuss gluten, goitrogens, and other dietary factors relevant to their specific presentation

  • Gut health support — given the strong connection between gut health, intestinal permeability, and autoimmune thyroid conditions, gut-focused therapies are frequently an important part of thyroid care at Natura

  • Lifestyle medicine — stress management, sleep optimization, and movement as foundational supports for thyroid and overall endocrine health

  • Referrals & collaborative care — we manage a wide range of thyroid conditions, including complex ones, and refer to endocrinology when specialist evaluation, procedures, or a second opinion are in your best interest
