Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the medical use of oxygen in a pressurized chamber, at a level higher than 1 atmosphere absolute (ATA). Increased pressure allows for oxygen to dissolve and saturate the blood plasma (independent of hemoglobin/red blood cells), which yields a broad variety of positive physiological, biochemical, and cellular effects. This noninvasive therapy is the most trusted way to increase oxygen levels to the body. The typical treatment lasts for 90 minutes. The patient will be in a seated upright position.

There are many conditions which may be helped by this treatment.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Safety

There are different types of hyperbaric chambers. Simplified, there are hard sided chambers and there are soft sided chambers. The recent incidents of deaths occurring due to fire in a hyperbaric chamber have occurred in hard sided chambers.

At Natura, we utilize a soft sided chamber which, due to its design, does not have the capacity for the flash fires, which are the likely or known causes of the recent fires. While we utilize oxygen like in all hyperbaric chambers, the concentration in and around a soft sided chamber cannot reach levels which make this type of combustion possible.

Hard sided chambers can provide higher pressures than the soft sided chambers. They are also significantly more expensive and require safety protocols which the soft sided chambers do not require. They also require specially designed facilities and/or other safety precautions. While there are situations where higher ATMs [higher pressures] are better, there is an extensive body of research that shows ATMs of 1.3, the typical pressure achieved in a soft sided chamber, is associated with positive outcomes across a range of health issues.

We are Natura are committed to providing hyperbaric treatments to as many people as we can, with the highest degree of safety. Our chamber is always supervised by a physician, and it is run by a respiratory therapist and trained staff. We review our safety protocols regularly. We train staff regarding normal operations and what to do should a patient have a medical emergency while in the chamber. We take safety seriously and we review safety protocols regularly.
