Urinary Health

The urinary system is intimately connected to nearly every other system in the body — influenced by hormones, gut health, immune function, metabolic health, nervous system regulation, and more. Urologic symptoms are often signals of something deeper going on, and at Natura, we take the time to find out what that is. Our approach focuses on treating the root cause, supporting the whole person, and preventing urologic conditions from developing or worsening over time.
We provide urologic support for patients of all ages — from children to older adults and everyone in between — and work collaboratively with urologists, pelvic floor physical therapists, and other specialists when indicated.
Our Approach
Urologic health rarely exists in isolation. A recurrent UTI may reflect immune dysfunction or microbiome imbalance. Prostate inflammation may be connected to diet, hormones, or chronic infection. Urinary incontinence may be driven by hormonal changes, pelvic floor dysfunction, or neurological factors. We look at all of these connections and build an individualized care plan that addresses what is actually driving your urologic concerns — not just managing symptoms as they arise.
We prescribe pharmaceutical treatments, including antibiotics, when they are clearly indicated — and we layer in naturopathic therapies to support healing, restore balance, and reduce the likelihood of recurrence. When findings suggest the need for specialist evaluation — including concerning PSA results, imaging, or conditions beyond our scope — we refer to urology and coordinate care accordingly. If cancer is identified in the course of urologic care, Dr. Margaret Coffey provides comprehensive integrative support for patients navigating a cancer diagnosis.
Conditions We Support
Many urologic conditions are relevant across all patients. Below are concerns that tend to be more specific to female- or male-bodied patients, listed separately for clarity.
Female-Bodied Patients
Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) — for patients who experience frequent or difficult-to-resolve UTIs, we investigate the underlying factors driving recurrence and address them directly, alongside antibiotic treatment when needed
Interstitial cystitis / painful bladder syndrome — a complex and often underdiagnosed condition; we offer naturopathic support focused on reducing bladder inflammation, identifying dietary and environmental triggers, and improving quality of life
Urinary incontinence — stress, urge, and mixed urinary incontinence are extremely common and highly undertreated. We address underlying contributors and refer to pelvic floor physical therapy when appropriate
Overactive bladder — frequency, urgency, and nighttime urination addressed through a root-cause naturopathic approach
Pelvic pain with urinary symptoms — we work to identify and address the underlying drivers of pelvic pain and urinary discomfort, and collaborate with pelvic floor physical therapists and other specialists when needed
Hormonal effects on urinary health — estrogen decline during perimenopause and menopause significantly affects bladder and urethral tissue; we address these changes as part of comprehensive hormonal care
Bladder prolapse support — naturopathic support and referral to pelvic floor physical therapy for patients managing bladder prolapse
Kidney stone prevention & support — dietary modification, hydration strategies, and targeted supplementation to reduce stone formation and support urinary tract health; acute cases are referred to urology when needed
Male-Bodied Patients
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — one of the most common conditions in older men, we offer naturopathic support to reduce urinary symptoms, support prostate health, and slow progression through evidence-based natural therapies and pharmaceutical care when indicated
Prostatitis — acute and chronic prostate inflammation addressed through targeted naturopathic care, including antibiotics when appropriate
Elevated PSA & prostate monitoring — we order and monitor PSA testing as part of proactive prostate health surveillance, and refer to urology when findings are concerning
Urinary symptoms related to prostate health — hesitancy, frequency, urgency, incomplete emptying, and nocturia all commonly relate to prostate health and are addressed as part of comprehensive prostate care
Recurrent UTIs — less common in men but clinically significant; we investigate underlying causes and treat appropriately
Erectile dysfunction — urologic and hormonal contributors to ED are both within our scope; we address this condition comprehensively and cross-reference with our reproductive and hormone health care
Kidney stone prevention & support — dietary guidance, hydration strategies, and naturopathic support to minimize stone formation and recurrence; acute cases referred when needed
Testosterone-related urinary effects — hormonal influences on urinary function assessed and addressed as part of whole-person male health care
In-office urinalysis — routine and detailed urine testing performed at Natura for both screening and monitoring purposes
Send-out urinalysis panels — when more comprehensive urine analysis is needed, we send samples to specialized laboratories for detailed evaluation
Organic acid testing (OAT) — urine-based functional testing that provides insight into metabolic function, gut health, nutritional status, and other factors that influence urologic health
PSA testing — ordered and monitored for prostate health surveillance and risk assessment
Comprehensive lab testing — hormonal panels, inflammatory markers, immune function, and metabolic markers relevant to urologic health
Imaging referrals — we refer for bladder ultrasound, post-void residual measurement, CT, and other imaging when clinically indicated
Urology referrals — we refer to urologists for specialist evaluation, procedures, and conditions beyond our scope, and coordinate care collaboratively
